Packing activity: All supplies listed on the screen will physically be there in the room. As will an example of a hiking pack. While the students list what they think is a need or a want, one volunteer will be separating the pile of supplies into physical representations on the side.

Important question and answers: these are must ask questions regarding the placement of heavy and lighter objects within the pack. This should follow on from the Body maintenance class on how to look after your back.
Heavy - Lower
Lighter – Higher

Once this is competed the pile should be close to perfect, though a few items that shouldn’t be there will most likely be present. With the teachers help, another volunteer will attempt to pack the bag with vocal help from the class.
Students will quickly find that it doesn’t all fit!!

Handout: Handout would list what items are essential for the trip. Parents would have received a copy of this with other related permission and medical forms to help with preparation for the trip.

Now students have a list in front of them and the culling on the equipment can begin. Done by teacher.

Final Packing: Now the equipment has been refined, another volunteer can come up and repack with your help.

Now a student can try the pack on their back to feel it’s weight. Depending on class size, more than one or all students can feel the weight!! Once they find out how heavy these packs will be, perhaps the points raised in pre-trip preparation in the Body maintenance class will be more fully adhered to.

Conclusion:

The tying in of the body maintenance class in the above point would form the beginning of the conclusion. Further elaboration on the importance of looking after your body, both through pre trip fitness and strength training, and through menu design, in order to cope with the demand of the trek. The trip will be so much more enjoyable for the students if they follow this advice.

Homework: Would be to, when at home practice packing and repacking their bags so they are proficient in this skill. This is a self monitored homework task.
